Just about anyone who has owned a turbo Subaru has at some point wanted more horsepower. One of the easiest ways to increase horsepower output is to replace the undersized factory turbo with a larger aftermarket unit. The downside to increasing turbo size is response otherwise known as turbo lag. Modern turbochargers use lightweight materials and larger port diameters to decrease this lag without hurting top end power. The newest generation of turbochargers use machined from solid "billet" aluminum to bring you the lightest possible compressor wheel and better airflow characteristics than previously possible using cast compressor wheel designs. These aluminum wheels are better balanced and cause less stress on rotational and thrust bearings which prolongs turbo life and allows them to operate more efficiently at higher speeds (turbine rpm) which is just a cool way of saying they make more power with less work. Most vehicles need little to no modification to take advantage of a larger turbocharger unit.
Modern Subaru Turbochargers are available in three styles and a variety of sizes. The styles are Standard Compressor Outlet,  Flanged Compressor Outlet (2005+ Legacy GT, 2008+ WRX, etc), and VF54 Style Flanged Outlet (2010+ Legacy, 2014 Forester, etc). These turbochargers are all available in a variety of sizes detailed below. The full line of replacement Subaru turbochargers available from RalliTEK can be found here  (http://www.rallitek.com/prodtype.asp?CAT_ID=919)

Turbocharger Sizing Guide

All minimum modifications listed are for 14psi spring pressure. Higher boost may require additional modification.

2.0L EngineTD05-16G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Stock Engine Internals
  • Catless Uppipe
  • 565cc fuel injectors (STI pinks, WRX dark blue, or aftermarket)
  • Stock Intercooler - recommend upgrading for optimal power
  • notes: Great turbo choice for 2.0L engine, small increase in lag over stock TD04 turbo, very small increase with billet wheel option. This combination produces optimal power with minimal lag. Torque output similar to horsepower output.
TD05-18G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Stock Engine Internals
  • Catless Uppipe
  • 255lph fuel pump
  • 565cc fuel injectors (STI pinks, WRX dark blue, or aftermarket)
  • Upgraded intercooler
  • notes: On standard compressor wheel there is a very small power increase on the 2.0L engine over the TD05-16G with a considerably slower spool. With billet compressor wheel option lag is reduced and turbo will make more top end power. RalliTEK only recommends this turbocharger on a 2.0L engine with the billet compressor wheel option.
TD05-20G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Upgraded Engine Internals (pistons, rods, & oiling system)
  • Catless uppipe or full header, high flow catted exhaust
  • 255lph fuel pump
  • 850cc fuel injectors
  • TGV Deletes
  • Upgraded intercooler
  • note: High lag, not recommended on 2.0L engine unless extreme internal engine breathing modifications have been performed such as ported heads with high lift cams and oversized valves. Strongly recommend billet compressor wheel option to even consider this turbocharger on a 2.0L engine. With proper engine modification this turbo can provide very high horsepower with more than 200hp per liter to the wheels. The additional turbo lag can be overcome with a high revving engine and high rpm driving style. With proper high octane fuel or ethanol this turbo will produce over 400 wheel horsepower with power climbing clear to red-line. This would be considered a race only turbo.
TD06-20G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Upgraded Engine Internals (pistons, rods, & oiling system)
  • Catless uppipe or full header, high flow catted exhaust
  • 255lph fuel pump
  • 850cc fuel injectors
  • TGV Deletes
  • Upgraded intercooler
  • note: Extreme lag, not recommended on 2.0L engine unless extreme internal engine breathing modifications have been performed such as ported heads with high lift cams and oversized valves.
2.5L EngineDue to boost creep issues on the 2.5L engines RalliTEK recommends all stock VF series or aftermarket turbochargers have their turbine housings ported to increase wastegate flow. This porting service increases flow to the wastegate flapper door which allows the vehicles boost control system to function properly preventing boost spikes and boost creep. We can provide this service to any turbocharger for $99 plus shipping.TD05-16G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Stock Engine Internals
  • Catless Uppipe
  • Stock Fuel System
  • Stock Intercooler - recommend upgrading for optimal power
  • note: Extremely low lag, same or less than most VF (STI, late WRX) series turbochargers. Very high torque, often higher than top end horsepower. Billet compressor wheel will reduce lag further and provide a small increase to top end power. Great turbo choice for low end power but recommend the TD05-18G for optimal combination of low end torque and top end power with the 2.5L engine.
TD05-18G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Stock Engine Internals
  • Catless Uppipe
  • Stock Fuel System
  • Stock STI Intercooler - on WRX, recommend upgrading for optimal power
  •  note: Low lag, similar to stock VF series turbo. Billet wheel option spool faster than most VF turbo's. This is a very potent turbocharger choice on the 2.5L engine providing euqal torque and horsepower with very little drop-off in the top end. Billet wheel option will reduce lag further and reduce power drop-off up top for an even more potent combination. This billet wheel turbo can easily push past the limits of the stock fuel system however can be tuned safely in most situations on a stock engine.
TD05-20G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Stock Engine Internals
  • Catless Uppipe or full header, high flow catted exhaust
  • 255lph fuel pump
  • 850cc fuel injectors
  • TGV Deletes
  • Upgraded Intercooler
  • note: Moderate lag, very high top end power, can easily exceed the power limits of the stock EJ25 engine. Recommend upgraded engine internals and air-flow modifications to reach optimal power. Recommend billet compressor wheel to reduce lag
TD06-20G
  • Custom ECU tune
  • Upgraded Engine Internals
  • Catless Uppipe or full header, high flow racing exhaust
  • 255lph fuel pump
  • 850cc fuel injectors
  • TGV Deletes
  • Upgraded intercooler
  • note: High lag, Recommend internal engine breathing modifications such as ported heads with high lift cams and oversized valves. Requires built engine with at a minimum of aftermarket forged pistons.  High octane fuel or e85 required to see full potential of turbo. Recommended for full racing use only where engines are built to function in and maintain high RPM.
