What Are Rear Differentials And How Do They Work?

Let's start with the basics of rear differentials. Rear differentials are the components that connect the driveshaft/driveline to the rear axles. They transfer power from the spinning driveshaft to the axles. Subaru rear differentials are open differentials, which allow the left and right axles and tires to spin at different speeds, especially when the vehicle turns. This is because the inside wheel takes a shorter path than the outside wheel, resulting in different wheel speeds. Open differentials allow for this variation and contribute to the smooth driving experience in your Subaru. Additionally, open differentials send power to the path of least resistance, promoting better gas mileage and a smoother driving experience.

What Are The Downsides To Open Differentials?

Open Differentials have a drawback when used in low-traction scenarios such as dirt, mud, and snow. They tend to send power to the tire with the least traction, which can be a disadvantage off-road. This results in decreased power being sent to the tire with the most traction. When off-roading, you may notice that if a tire lifts off the ground while going over an obstacle, it will spin and you may lose forward movement. This happens because the Open Differential sends power to the path of least resistance.

What Are TORQ Lockers?

TORQ Lockers is a component that can be added to an Open Differential to prevent power from being sent to the path of least resistance. By locking the differential together, it enables even 50:50 power distribution. This prevents power from being sent to the tire with the least traction, ensuring that both left and right tires spin at the same speed, maintaining momentum and traction for navigating trails.

What Makes TORQ Lockers Unique?

TORQ Lockers are unique because they are classified as automatic lockers. This is beneficial because the TORQ locker only engages when power is applied to the rear differential. When there is no power applied to the rear differential, the TORQ Locker disengages, allowing the tires to travel at different speeds and maintain the smooth operation of the rear differential, similar to what the vehicle has from Subaru.
